Dear Amy: How do you find websites for kids? — Gretchen, Glendale, Mo.
Dear Gretchen: The Internet is a huge place, and most websites are made for adults. Luckily, there are tons of cool kids sites out there if you know where to look. The easiest way to find sites made just for kids is to use a kid-friendly search engine such as www.askkids.com or http://kids.yahoo.com. To get started, think of descriptive words, called keywords, which describe the kinds of information you're looking for. For example, if you want to learn about how to take care of your new pet, you would search for “pet care” or something more specific like “dog care.” There are also some cool tricks you can do to improve your search results. For a list of search engine tips and tricks, visit http://kids.britannica.com/help_student?topic=search_tips.
Another way to find sites is to use a directory. Directories are lists of websites that are selected and sorted into categories and subcategories by moderators. You can find directories for kids at www.ipl.org/div/kidspace and www.dmoz.org/Kids_and_Teens. To find sites, browse through topics or use the search bar. If you find something really cool, share it by sending it to 4Kids.
