New York Thanksgiving Issue Date: 11-21-1999

Cool Spots imageEveryone loves a parade. Not many come close to the excitement of New York City's Thanksgiving Day Parade. Check out Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade Web site, a great place to be a part of the holiday magic. Follow the giant turkey float to www.nyctourist.com/macys_menu.htm. You'll get the 70-year history on this terrific event, including the first balloon appearances of Felix the Cat and Bullwinkle the Moose. You'll also view great photos from last year's parade, including clowns, marching bands, Rugrats and an inflatable version of Big Bird. And just in case you can make it to this fall's parade, the site has a great maps section, including tips on where to get the best view of the action. Cool Spots imageThings have changed a lot since the days of horses and hand plows. Start up your high-tech tractor and head out to the Midwestern fields with some ordinary farm families. Ring the doorbell at Troublesome Creek at www.pbs.org/wgbh/amex/trouble. They'll be happy to have you, because they want to teach people about the work of modern farmers. The Jordans have been on the same land in Iowa for generations. Daughter Jeanne made a film to show the world how tough it is to hold on to a family farm. Hang out for a while and learn some things about the history of farming in America. They'll show you the family album, too. Farming in today's USA is hard work, so head out to the heartland, and you'll appreciate the families who help to keep food on our tables.

Go back in time to www.archives.gov and enjoy relics from presidents, celebrities and ordinary people alike. The site has all kinds of famous documents, from the Bill of Rights to the Emancipation Proclamation. Don't miss the exhibits Powers of Persuasion, a collection of posters from World War II, and Portrait of Black Chicago. For something a bit different, there's the ever-infamous "When Nixon Met Elvis" exhibit. The Exhibit Hall oozes with awesome history!
