White House Renovation Issue Date: 11-26-2017

Cool Spots imageAfter President Harry Truman and his family moved into the White House in 1945, they discovered that the home was in need of extensive repairs. When a leg of the family piano fell through the floor in 1948, the Trumans had the home inspected for structural safety and found that it was in serious danger of collapsing. Saving the White House – Truman’s Extreme Makeover, trumanlibrary.org/whitehouse/exhibit, chronicles the renovations made to the country’s most famous mansion. Thanksgiving Parades Issue Date: 11-19-2017

Cool Spots image The annual Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, macys.com/social/parade, is enjoyed by millions, both in person and on television. The Executive Abroad map summarizes the international travel of former presidents and secretaries of state. In Mapping Inequality, maps created in 1935-1940 rate the credit worthiness of cities based on race. Real estate appraisers used these maps to determine areas’ economic values to preserve segregation. Slaves share personal stories in the Forced Migration of Enslaved People.
