What Is Fracking? Issue Date: 09-13-2015

Cool Spots imageHave you ever wondered where the natural gas that powers household appliances in many parts of the United States comes from? Dangers of Fracking, dangersoffracking.com, takes a look at Hydraulic Fracturing, a controversial drilling process that extracts natural gas from the earth. Drilling a single gas well requires 1 to 8 million gallons of water, which is mixed with chemicals and sand, then injected into a pipeline. Critics of fracking say some of these chemicals can contaminate the groundwater near the wells. Find out how you can stay informed and support the FRAC Act, so that your community can stay aware of chemicals that may be present in your drinking water.

Fly Around the World Issue Date: 08-16-2015

Cool Spots imageThe National Air and Space Museum presents First Flight Around the World, in Pioneers of Flight, pioneersofflight.si.edu/ content/first-flight-around-world-0. More than a century ago, airplanes weren’t nearly as advanced as they are today. They were made of wood, fabric and wire. In 1924, eight pilots planned to undertake a 26,000-mile flight around the world. In this game, you can help Plan the Flight. It’s trickier than it seems, because airplanes at the time could only travel 600 miles before refueling, and finding a safe place to stop while flying over an ocean could be a challenge.
