Falling Into Autumn

The month of September brings with it the autumnal equinox on the 23rd. Like the vernal equinox in the spring, the autumnal equinox is a day with an equal amount of daylight and darkness. Also, it is designated as the first day of fall, which just so happens to be my favorite season.

As the sun moves toward the southern hemisphere, the temperature in the northern hemisphere grows more temperate. I enjoy spending lots of time outside in the cooler weather.

I also like spending time outdoors when the leaves are changing colors. Most trees sense the changing weather and begin making preparations to go dormant for the winter. As www.esf.edu/pubprog/brochure/ leaves/leaves.htm explains, the trees cease producing chlorophyll, which makes leaves green and which allows other pigments, such as orange and red, to show.

Finally, I look forward to seeing the constellations that cannot be viewed during the summer. Pisces and Taurus are just two constellations that will soon be in view.
